Eileen Agar - official launch events

We are thrilled to be launching EILEEN AGAR by Laura Smith, book number six in the Modern Women Artists series, this February.

It's no mean feat to be a small start-up press attempting to launch a book in lockdown during a global pandemic, so please raise a glass of something tasty from the comfort of your own home as we invite you to join us at not one - but two - brilliant evening events with our author and very special guests.

Laura Smith in conversation with Katy Hessel

Thursday 18 February 2021, 1700 (GMT)

The first event to mark the launch of the sixth book in the Modern Women Artists series is with special guest Katy Hessel from @thegreatwomenartists. Join Katy as she asks Laura all about Eileen Agar's fascinating life and work, and find out more about some of the themes Laura introduces in her book.

Come with some questions you'd like to ask the author, as we'll be taking comments throughout for Katy to ask our author at the end in a live Q&A session.

Pre-ordered copies of the book will be sent out on 11 Feb in time for everyone to read ahead.

Eileen Agar Inspires: Lucy Stein

Thursday 11 March 2021, 1800 (GMT)

Listen in as author Laura Smith explores the influence and legacy of Eileen Agar's work and ideas today, as she is joined in conversation by contemporary artist Lucy Stein.

Laura and Lucy will discuss the key concepts behind Agar's work which Laura introduces in her book - including the idea of 'womb-magic' - and look at how some of these ideas are explored in Lucy's work today. Afterwards, Lucy will take us on a behind-the-scenes tour of her Cornish studio and give us a special preview of some of her current works in progress. A short Q&A will follow.

Lucy Stein (b.1979, UK) studied at Glasgow School of Art and de Ateliers, Amsterdam. Lucy was a resident at Porthmeor Studio 5 as part of the Tate St Ives Artist Programme (2015) and her work was recently featured in the touring group exhibition Virginia Woolf: An exhibition inspired by her writings (2019) curated by Laura Smith.

Surreal cocktail menu

We can't go out, but we can all share in the fun of a badly home-made cocktail or two. Taking inspiration from some of Eileen Agar's surreal artworks and titles, here are a few suggestions we might be trying out whilst listening to Laura and our special guests.

Feel free to also come dressed in suitably surreal headwear inspired by Eileen Agar (see: Ceremonial Hat for Eating Bouillabaisse, p.37) whilst sipping on your cocktail...

INSPIRED BY: Agar's use of marine objects in her assemblages

LOCKDOWN VERSION: A Bloody Mary

MOCKTAIL ALTERNATIVE: Lose the gin

Untitled (Box), 1935 - inspiring a marine-themed cocktail
